UofT Dentistry Michael Glogauer

We have had so much fun working with UofT Dentistry over the last couple of years, especially at being able to take a little peek behind the curtain at the faculty, labs, and students working away in the practical lab. This year we had the honour of photographing Professor at UofT and Dentist-in-Chief at UNH, Michael Glogauer. Of the few times we have shot around campus this was the first time that we were taken into a lab and were able to get some ‘at work’ photos of someone, not in the practical lab. Though neither of us have a scientific bone in our body (being right brained, am I right lol) Michael was kind enough to put up with us as we hustle and bustle around him shooting.

We are always so so appreciative of folks who are not rushing to finish up, and Michael is a prime example of that. He was so so generous with his time and we are very grateful. Any photographer knows that saying “ok just one more shot” is never really “just one more shot” and we dropped that line multiple times with him and he so kindly rolled with the punches.

Western Sydney University Alum, Allison Hawks for WSU Gradlife

We’re so excited to find our work resonating with folks on the other side of the world, so much so that we got a call from Australia! More specifically from Western Sydney University. It’s so cool to be able to do what we do here, but for someone else on another corner of the planet. When they assigned us this project with their alum, Allison Hawks, we knew exactly what to do and how to do it! Though born and raised in Toronto, Allison spent her student days at Western Sydney University. She has been out of school and back home for some time so we connected with her one beautiful afternoon, meeting at Humber Bay, to shoot a few photos of her in her WSU gear.

Headshots with @JoannaDoesMakeUp

We came across Joanna the way anyone nowadays meets and connects… on Instagram. We were looking for a local MUA to collaborate with on a creative shoot. Someone who does your skin but better, and with a cute twist kind of make up, and her work is exactly that. After a series of unfortunate events on our shoot date we ended up spending a stormy afternoon in studio all day together, and not wanting anyone to leave empty handed we convinced (read: maybe peer pressured a little) Joanna to let us take some new headshots for her. Even though our shoot was a complete bust we really connected with Joanna, spending a couple of hours chit chatting and getting to know each other, so much so that we stayed in touch and eventually we all did have a successful shoot together (more on that later!). At the time of shooting in this studio (Studio ThxrtyFour, no longer open unfortunately) had a beautiful floral installation that we the focus of our original shooting plan, and I’m so happy that we ended up being able to shoot there even if only for a few quick photos. Also loved adding in some light aromatic smoke in post for a moodier kind of feel.

Portraits with Salty Western in Waimea

Ethan likes to say that I (Stef) am unable to have “just a normal vacation”. While Ethan is always on the hunt for our next life adventure together, I’m always searching our next photo opportunity. (In my own defence: we typically travel with our gear anyways and there’s just something so inspiring about shooting in a new location that makes me feel excited) I’m happy to say that this time the tables turned and it was actually Ethan who pitched shooting with Taira, which to our joyous surprise she was on board for!

Taira runs a beautiful leather goods company called Salty Western“Salty Western was created by islander Taira Barron Cran. She grew up on the North Shore of Oahu and surfed before she could walk. Everyday revolved around the ocean, though her love for horses and the country life grew just as strong. Eventually, she moved to a 35,000 acre cattle ranch on the Big Island of Hawai’i. In her new little cowboy house, she started to use her creativity through leather. Experimenting with it, she began wetting it, dying it, cutting it up, and carving it. She drew inspiration in from her versatile lifestyle; from coming out of the Pacific ocean with dripping salty hair, to sitting by a fire with dirty cowboy boots, sipping whiskey after a long cattle drive. Much like living through an old western movie, though this one is surrounded by Hawaiian salt in the air. This was how Salty Western was born.”

We spent an evening with Taira at her ranch (after first going to the wrong ranch lol) where we photographed her working on, and with, some her of products. Waimea is also known as Hawaiian cowboy county, full of rolling green pastures, and home to lots of cowboy and cattle ranches so this was truly the perfect backdrop to shoot with Taira considering her brand ethos. What is it about watching other artists work that is so beautiful and interesting? Because that’s how photographing Taira felt. We walked around the ranch, said hi to a horse (!!), and later watched the sunset after we parted ways. It was such an honour to do this and we’re so thankful for Taira’s invitation to visit, we look forward to returning one day!
