Portraits for University College

After photographing University College’s revitalization project we were so honoured to be asked to return to photograph some of their staff for their upcoming alumni magazine feature! It is always an honour to continue working with the same team on different projects, and to learn and grow alongside them. The architecture at UC is so beautiful, the whole time we were shooting their interiors and exteriors we kept remarking about how fun it would be to use these spaces as backdrops for portraits. So when UC reached out asking us to do that exact thing we were really excited! We lucked out with a couple of beautiful days for our shoots (the weather in Toronto in March can be great or terrible, no in between lol) so we made sure to make use of the recently updated quadrangle outdoors. We were fascinated by some of the gothic architecture the University of Toronto has to offer all throughout their campuses, UC included, and love how much of it combines it’s classic pieces alongside newly restored areas that have a modern look.

We photographed Professors Colleen, Larissa, and Ange and had such a blast doing so! Getting your photo taken can be an awkward experience (unless you’re a professional of course) so we really pride ourselves on being able to make people feel comfortable and confident with not only the final photos they receive but through their entire shooting experience.

UofT Dentistry Michael Glogauer

We have had so much fun working with UofT Dentistry over the last couple of years, especially at being able to take a little peek behind the curtain at the faculty, labs, and students working away in the practical lab. This year we had the honour of photographing Professor at UofT and Dentist-in-Chief at UNH, Michael Glogauer. Of the few times we have shot around campus this was the first time that we were taken into a lab and were able to get some ‘at work’ photos of someone, not in the practical lab. Though neither of us have a scientific bone in our body (being right brained, am I right lol) Michael was kind enough to put up with us as we hustle and bustle around him shooting.

We are always so so appreciative of folks who are not rushing to finish up, and Michael is a prime example of that. He was so so generous with his time and we are very grateful. Any photographer knows that saying “ok just one more shot” is never really “just one more shot” and we dropped that line multiple times with him and he so kindly rolled with the punches.

UofT TRC Report- Pow Wow

THE NEXT INSTALMENT OF SHOOTS FROM UOFT’S TRUTH & RECONCILIATION REPORT IS FROM THEIR POW WOW!

Although this wasn’t our first time attending a pow wow, it was certainly our first time photographing one, and what an experience it was! Local vendors and much of the community (from near and far) all come together for pow wows; they’re an opportunity for everyone to sing, dance, socialize, and honour the Indigenous culture. With that, it was the perfect feature to include in the University of Toronto’s TRC report so we went to the stadium to shoot one afternoon!

While quite beautiful there are a few considerations to keep in mind when shooting a pow wow; photo and video are prohibited during certain parts of the event (prayers, flag songs), eagle feathers are of the utmost importance (you can read about that here), and it’s important to ask for permission before photographing someone.

For this event and shooting for the report specifically we needed model releases for faces so we tried our best to shooting close crops, details, or (to the opposite end) from afar.
